about

For their debut release The Beirds have put together the Taking Flight EP, four tracks of tight grooves and atmospheric rock which captures the band's energy and vibe. This first release literally puts The Beirds on the map and was recorded over two heady weekends at Asparagus Media Studios in Takoma Park, MD. While this is a band that must really be experienced live at a show, the four members of The Beirds showcase the depth and range of their sound on these stellar tracks.

First up is “Walter White,” which reveals the band’s psychedelic influences and showcases the strengths of the band with intricate, catchy melodies by guitarist Dave Salvo, a pulsating underlying groove, Zach Hoffman’s frenetic drum fills, and a soaring climax reminiscent of a Pink Floyd track. Just like its namesake Heisenberg, this tune starts off innocently enough, but then takes the listener on a wild ride to the other side and for a brief moment escape is uncertain.

The second song on the EP is the rock'n'roll stomper “Send Me A Soul.” Featuring moody verses and a headbanging chorus, this track features the band’s introspective and high energy sides all in four minutes This track really shows how The Beirds like to have fun and let the music guide them. If the first tune had you head-nodding and humming along, “Send Me A Soul” will get you moving with its irresistible energy.

The Beirds bring their own light show to all of their gigs, and that visual landscape is the perfect complement to the ambient texture-based grooves of “Stringer Bell.” This track again showcases the deeper and moodier side of the band, and if you close your eyes you can almost imagine dancing in unison with the crowd at the 9:30 Club. An instrumental track that pulses along with Matt Bartlett's deep bass lines, this is one to watch for at The Beirds live show for sure.

Closing out the EP is “Hop On Cop” with its infectious jazz-funk-rock vibe. This track has been a fan favorite at Beirds shows and it’s easy to see why. Chad Bartlett's hooky piano lines keep the tune moving along nicely, and just when you are comfortable in the groove along comes a killer Dave Salvo guitar solo. Hop On Cop, based on the original composition by Salvo’s longtime musical collaborator Justin Shuster, is the perfect introduction to The Beirds’ sound and leaves you wanting to catch the band in their natural element - on stage at a club near you.“
